One of our key service offerings is Air Excavation, a modern, non-destructive excavation method that provides a safer and more efficient alternative to mechanical excavation in tight access locations or for exposing critical underground services.

Air excavation uses high-pressure compressed air to break up soil while a powerful vacuum system removes the loosened material. This process allows for the precise exposure of underground services without the risk of damage commonly associated with conventional excavation equipment.

Key Benefits of Air Excavation

✅ Enhanced Safety

  • Significantly reduces the risk of striking underground utilities such as power, gas, water, telecommunications, and fibre-optic services.

  • Creates a safer work environment for both workers and the public.

  • Minimises the likelihood of costly accidents and service interruptions.

✅ Non-Destructive Excavation

  • Allows underground assets to be safely located and exposed without damaging critical infrastructure.

  • Ideal for utility investigations, service locating, and maintenance work.

✅ Increased Precision

  • Provides accurate excavation in confined or sensitive areas.

  • Enables operators to expose utilities, pipelines, and cables with exceptional control.

✅ Reduced Project Risk

  • Helps prevent costly repairs, delays, and disruptions caused by accidental utility strikes.

  • Supports compliance with industry safety requirements and best practices.

✅ Environmentally Friendly

  • Minimises ground disturbance compared to traditional excavation methods.

  • Reduces unnecessary excavation and site impact.

✅ Improved Efficiency

  • Faster and cleaner excavation around existing services.

  • Reduces downtime associated with utility damage and repair work.

Ideal Applications

Air excavation is particularly effective for:

  • Utility locating and potholing

  • Service verification

  • Daylighting underground assets

  • Trenching around existing infrastructure

  • Pole and sign installations

  • Civil construction projects

  • Roading and infrastructure works

  • Sensitive excavation in congested utility corridors

Why

I started Compact Construction because after more than 20 years in the industry I got tired of watching careful plans get derailed by careless digging and costly cleanup. There’s a real art to working around critical underground services — gas, water, power, fibre — and too often the tried-and-true methods either put those services at risk or left the site looking like a demolition derby. I wanted a better way: an approach that protects infrastructure, cuts disposal bills, and keeps the jobsite tidy.

Over two decades on job sites taught me the limits of big machines and blunt-force solutions. I noticed a recurring need for precision: safe excavation that doesn’t rely on hauling away truckloads of contaminated spoil, and doesn’t turn a compact urban lot into a muddy nightmare. So I built a company focused on smarter choices — using techniques and equipment that minimize disturbance, preserve existing materials where possible, and manage excavated material cost-effectively.

Tight access is no longer an excuse. Our compact equipment was selected because small doesn’t mean weak — it means nimble. Whether it’s a narrow alley, a crowded utility corridor, or a backyard with a fence and a nosy neighbor, our machines get in, do the job safely, and get out with minimal fuss. No space is out of reach for our safe excavation methods, and that’s exactly the kind of practical, site-sensitive problem solving that inspired Compact Construction from the very beginning.
